About Aerosmith

Aerosmith burst from Boston in 1970, fusing blues-infused hard rock with theatrical swagger. Founders Steven Tyler (vocals) and Joe Perry (guitar) led a lineup that quickly built a devoted following with incendiary live shows and razor-sharp riffs. The original lineup included Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, and Ray Tabano, who was soon replaced by Brad Whitford, helping solidify a chemistry that would power a string of era-defining albums. Their 1973 debut, featuring Dream On, announced a new American hard rock voice, blending Southern-inspired grit with pop hooks and virtuosic guitar work. Through the mid-70s they became one of the era's biggest acts, forging an identity built on fearless riffs, dangerous onstage energy, and a catalog that would help define arena rock.

Aerosmith's 1975-1980 era yielded Toys in the Attic, Rocks, and the groundbreaking collaboration with Run-DMC on Walk This Way in 1986, which bridged rock and hip-hop and rejuvenated the band's career. The 1987-1993 run, featuring Permanent Vacation, Pump, and Get a Grip, delivered top-charting singles and platinum sales, turning the group into a global stadium phenomenon. Years active: 1970-present. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, Aerosmith has sold well over 150 million records worldwide and remains a benchmark for longevity, musicianship, and infectious energy on stage.

Playing Style

Aerosmith's playing blends blues-infused hard rock with pop hooks and swaggering groove. Joe Perry delivers punchy, blues-based riffs and melodic solos, while Brad Whitford locks in tight rhythm parts that propel songs forward. The band's sound often centers on power chords, pentatonic scales, precise string bends, and dynamic contrasts that swing from restrained verses to explosive choruses. Perry's signature windmill strums and the band's tight, high-energy rhythm section give tracks that classic, arena-friendly feel. Across their catalog, you can study groove-centric comping, memorable hooks, and phrasing that sits right on the line between raw grit and melodic accessibility.

🎸 Gear & Equipment

Iconic Aerosmith gear centers on Gibson Les Pauls and other Les Paul variants, famously used by Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, paired with Marshall amplifiers for that blistering, saturated tone. Steven Tyler has been associated with versatile live rigs that include Fender and other stage guitars, while the band has used classic pedals and delays to shape their lush solos and big chorus sounds. The group’s sound also features elements like the use of a talk box on select tracks, plus tasteful use of delay, chorus, and overdrive to craft their signature punch.
