Dire Straits

Dire Straits formed in London in 1977 when Mark Knopfler (lead guitar, vocals) and his younger brother David Knopfler joined bassist John Illsley and drummer Pick Withers. The band's early sound fused pub-rock grit with Knopfler's deft fingerpicking, blues-inflected riffs, and economical arrangements, yielding a string of decisive live performances and a breakthrough single, Sultans of Swing, that became a staple of classic rock radio. Over the next decade they released a string of influential albums that balanced sharp storytelling with clean, melodic guitar work, establishing Dire Straits as one of the era's most distinctive voices. The band’s core lineup endured from 1977 to 1985, with Knopfler as the creative architect until their formal dissolution in 1995; their later career as a global force included the multi-platinum hit Brothers in Arms and landmark music videos that helped define the MTV era.\n\nBrothers in Arms (1985) was a watershed, one of the best-selling albums of all time, notable for its pristine production, economical guitar lines, and globally charting singles like Money for Nothing and Walk of Life. The group earned numerous Brit Awards and Grammys, influenced a generation of guitarists with Knopfler's articulate fingerstyle, and left an enduring mark on rock history through records that bridged pub-rock roots with stadium-sized ambition.
