About Slayer
Slayer formed in 1981 in Huntington Beach, California, when guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman joined forces with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya and soon drummer Dave Lombardo. Their early demos and the 1983 debut Show No Mercy introduced a brutal thrash blueprint that would become a template for speed and aggression in metal. The band’s ferocious live shows and uncompromising studio work set a new standard for intensity and precision, inspiring countless players to chase speed with control.
Slayer's breakthrough came with Reign in Blood (1986), a razor-sharp album that amplified the band’s relentless tempos and savage riffs. Across South of Heaven (1988) and Seasons in the Abyss (1990), they expanded their sound while maintaining the core ferocity that defined their approach. They are widely regarded as one of the Big Four thrash bands, and their influence extends across metal subgenres from death to black metal and modern extreme metal. In 2013, Slayer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a milestone that underscored their impact on guitar-driven metal and live performance. This page highlights 45 guitar and bass lessons drawn from their catalog, offering a guided path through tight rhythm parts, blistering picking, and blazing leads that embody Slayer’s relentless energy and precision.

Slayer’s playing style centers on a ruthless twin-guitar assault, delivering tight, palm-muted riffs and high-gain, cutting tones. Kerry King’s rhythm parts provide brutal, chugging power chords and aggressive down-stroke attack, while Jeff Hanneman contributed melodic yet savage leads that cut through the mix. Their songs demand extreme speed, precise timing, and a direct, no-fluff approach to riffing and groove. Core techniques you’ll encounter include heavy palm muting, rapid alternate picking, brisk tremolo picking on fast passages, and sharp, staccato phrasing that lands every downbeat with impact. The result is a sound that’s instantly identifiable: brutal, precise, and relentlessly energetic.
🎸 Gear & Equipment
Iconic gear in Slayer’s orbit includes Kerry King’s ESP KH-2 signature guitar, known for its heavy build, dual humbuckers, and locking trem, which helped define much of the band’s rhythm attack. Jeff Hanneman also favored robust guitars across his era, contributing to the band’s dual-guitar assault. On amps, Slayer is associated with high-gain Mesa/Boogie rigs that delivered tight, articulate tone for fast riffs and searing leads. The live and studio setups typically featured solid-state and tube heads with 4x12 cabinets, and a practical pedalboard consisting of distortion/overdrive, plus modulation (phaser/flanger) and delay to shape punchy leads and tempo-driven shifts.
