About Soundgarden
Soundgarden formed in Seattle in 1984 and became one of the defining acts of the Pacific Northwest's grunge and alternative metal movement. Led by Chris Cornell with Kim Thayil on guitar and a rotating rhythm section that included Hiro Yamamoto and later Ben Shepherd, the band fused heavy, detuned riffs with psychedelic textures and melodic complexity. Their early releases on Sub Pop—Ultramega OK (1988) and Louder Than Love (1989)—built a fervent fanbase, while Badmotorfinger (1991) and the worldwide breakthrough Superunknown (1994) established them as major players in rock, producing enduring songs and a reputation for sonic daring. After a brief 1997 breakup, Soundgarden reformed in 2010 and continued to influence a new generation of players until Cornell's passing in 2017, cementing a lasting legacy on grunge, metal, and modern rock.
