Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath is the title track from their self-titled debut album released in early 1970. The song opens with rain and a creeping, doom-laden riff that would redefine heavy rock and foreshadow the birth of heavy metal.

Recorded at Regent Sound Studio in London in late 1969, the track features a simple yet devastating modal riff built around a dark mood and a famous tritone interval. Written by Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward and produced by Rodger Bain, it helped establish a template for gloom-soaked riffs that influenced countless bands and cemented the band's place in rock history.

What You'll Learn

Students will learn the signature opening riff and the underlying rhythm, built on palm-muted power chords and down-picking at a slow, heavy tempo around 70-75 BPM. We'll cover tone, timing, and how to articulate the ominous mood with dynamics, plus a quick look at the verse-chorus structure and how to transition between sections without losing the groove. The tricky parts include staying perfectly in time at that doom tempo, keeping muting tight to avoid stray strings, and hitting the correct accent on the downbeat to preserve the song's crushing feel.

Intermediate — helpful to have comfort with power chords, palm muting, and playing at a deliberate, slow tempo.

Practice Tips

  • 💡Practice the main riff at a slow, steady tempo with a metronome (about 70 BPM) until clean muting is achieved.
  • 💡Dial in a gritty, mid-focused tone to keep the riff tight and avoid muddiness; start with moderate gain.
  • 💡Use a simple backing track or drone in E minor to lock in the groove and internalize the riff's rhythm.
