Master Palm Muting: The Essential Rock Guitar Technique

Learn palm muting technique for heavy rock and metal guitar. Step-by-step guide with practice exercises and song examples.

What is Palm Muting?

Palm muting (abbreviated "PM") is a guitar technique where you rest the edge of your picking hand lightly on the strings near the bridge while picking. This creates a chunky, percussive sound that's essential for rock, metal, and punk guitar. It's arguably the most important technique for playing heavy music.

How to Palm Mute

Step 1: Hand Position

Rest the fleshy edge of your picking hand (the pinky side) lightly across all strings, right where they meet the bridge saddles. Don't press too hard — you want to dampen the strings, not completely mute them.

Step 2: Find the Sweet Spot

The closer to the bridge, the less muted the sound. The further from the bridge, the more dead and thumpy. The sweet spot is usually right at the bridge saddles.

Step 3: Pick Through the Strings

While maintaining contact with the strings, pick normally. You should hear a "chunk chunk chunk" sound rather than open ringing notes.

Practice Exercises

Exercise 1: Open String Chugs

Palm mute the low E string and pick steady eighth notes. Focus on consistent pressure and even rhythm. Start at 80 BPM and work up to 160 BPM.

Exercise 2: PM + Open Contrast

Alternate between palm-muted and open notes. This contrast is what makes riffs dynamic. Think of "Enter Sandman" — muted chugs exploding into open power chords.

Exercise 3: Gallop Rhythm

The "gallop" (one eighth note + two sixteenth notes) is a metal staple. Iron Maiden uses it extensively. Palm mute the low string and practice: DUH-duh-duh DUH-duh-duh.

Songs to Practice Palm Muting

  • Metallica - "Master of Puppets" — The ultimate palm muting workout. Downpick everything.
  • AC/DC - "Back in Black" — Moderate tempo, great for learning rhythm control.
  • Megadeth - "Symphony of Destruction" — Mid-tempo chugs with power chord accents.
  • Pantera - "Walk" — Heavy, groovy palm-muted riff with squeals.
  • Black Sabbath - "Iron Man" — Slow and heavy, perfect for beginners.

Common Mistakes

  • Too much pressure: If the notes sound completely dead with no pitch, lighten up.
  • Hand too far forward: Keep close to the bridge or you'll choke the sound.
  • Inconsistent contact: Your hand should stay planted while picking — don't lift between notes.
  • Forgetting to relax: Tension kills tone and speed. Stay relaxed in your wrist and arm.
