Tesla formed in the early 1980s in Sacramento, California, and built a reputation on bluesy hard rock, soaring melodies, and a twin-guitar attack that became their signature. With Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch trading crunchy rhythm work and harmonized leads, Jeff Keith's gravelly vocal lines, Brian Wheat's solid bass, and Troy Luccketta's drum drive, they carved out a bold space in the West Coast rock scene. Their breakthrough came on Geffen's roster with Mechanical Resonance (1986), featuring a crowd-pleasing cover of Grand Funk Railroad's Little Suzi and a string of radio-friendly tracks that defined their early sound. They followed with the breakout The Great Radio Controversy (1990), delivering hits like Love Song and Paradise and establishing Tesla as one of the era's defining hard rock acts in the MTV era.
