About Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots burst out of San Diego in 1989 with a tight, hard-hitting blend of grunge, psychedelic rock, and classic blues-based rock. The original lineup - Scott Weiland on vocals, Dean DeLeo and Robert DeLeo on guitar and bass, and Eric Kretz on drums - started as Mighty Joe Young before rebranding as Stone Temple Pilots and quickly earned a following for their raw live energy and strong songwriting. Their early material combined punchy riffs with Weiland's expressive vocal delivery, setting the stage for a string of hard-hitting singles in the early 1990s.

With Core (1992) and Purple (1994), STP helped define the era that bridged grunge and traditional rock, delivering chart-topping hits like Plush, Interstate Love Song, and Vasoline. The band's albums became multi-platinum staples of 90s rock, and their music videos dominated MTV rotations while their songs resonated with fans across rock subgenres. The DeLeo brothers' intertwined guitar and bass lines became a signature, blending heavy groove with melodic hooks that still influence players today.

Over the years the lineup evolved, with Scott Weiland pursuing Velvet Revolver and other projects before the band reemerged with new singer Jeff Gutt in the late 2010s. STP has carried on as a defining post-grunge classic rock act, continuing to tour, release material, and inspire new generations of players who want to learn how to lock in with tight rhythm parts, epic choruses, and timeless riffs.

Playing Style

Stone Temple Pilots' playing style blends heavy riff-driven rock with melodic, groove-oriented bass lines that create a propulsive, stadium-ready foundation. Dean DeLeo's rhythm guitar lays down chunky power-chord chugs and tantalizing fills, often trading ideas with brother Robert DeLeo's bass lines to create a tight, intertwining groove. The band's compositions swing from brooding verses to soaring, radio-friendly choruses, rewarding precise picking and dynamic attack. Techniques fans will recognize include palm-muted chugging, open-string droning, blues-inspired phrasing, and careful use of space to let hooks breathe. The result is a sound that's immediately recognizable yet technically rewarding to learn on guitar and bass.

🎸 Gear & Equipment

Dean DeLeo's rhythm tone typically comes from a Les Paul-style guitar with humbuckers pushed through high-gain amps, sometimes augmented by a Telecaster for brighter textures. Robert DeLeo's bass work sits in the pocket with a fat, punchy tone—often running through large-amp rigs with a bit of fuzz or chorus to thicken the low end. Classic rock and modern players alike use pedals such as overdrive, fuzz, chorus, and delay to recreate STP's textures in both studio and live settings.
