Dire Straits

Dire Straits emerged from London in 1977, formed by Mark Knopfler and his brother David Knopfler, with John Illsley and Pick Withers completing the early rhythm section. Their debut album, released in 1978, fused pub rock, blues, and narrative folk, delivering tight, economical guitar lines and the now iconic Sultans of Swing. The band's storytelling approach and razor sharp timing set a new standard for guitar-based rock, influencing countless players with clean tones and precise phrasing.

The mid 80s breakthrough album Brothers in Arms (1985) became a global phenomenon, selling well over 125 million records, helping popularize the compact disc and MTV-era music videos. Dire Straits sound evolved through the late 80s and early 90s, culminating in the expansive On Every Street (1991) before the group disbanded in 1995.
