Metallica

Metallica formed in 1981 in Los Angeles when Lars Ulrich posted a local ad seeking musicians and James Hetfield answered. The early lineup also included Dave Mustaine before he left to form Megadeth, with Cliff Burton joining on bass and becoming a driving force behind the band's aggressive, melodic approach. The group quickly built a ferocious live reputation and a penchant for technical riffs that would come to define thrash metal.

Over the next decade Metallica released a string of landmark albums—Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets—that fused blistering tempos, intricate guitar work, and dark, introspective lyrics. Their influence helped reshape heavy metal in the 1980s, while later records such as And Justice for All and the self-titled Black Album pushed their sound into broader mainstream recognition and earned them a global following. The band has endured lineup changes and remains active today, continuing to tour and record.

Today Metallica is regarded as one of the most influential and commercially successful rock bands, with global sales in the hundreds of millions, numerous Grammy Awards, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
