About Rory Gallagher

Rory Gallagher was born in 1948 in Ballyshannon, Ireland, but grew up in Cork, where his ferocious blues-rock hunger began. He formed Taste in 1966, melding Irish roots with American blues and R&B to forge a raw, electrifying sound that electrified European stages and earned him a devoted following. After Taste disbanded in the late 1960s, Gallagher launched a fearless solo career that kept him on the road for decades, producing blistering studio records and some of the era’s most celebrated live performances. His impact on rock guitar endures in the way he bridged blues, rock and soul with unstoppable energy, inspiring countless players even years after his passing in 1995. DadRock Tabs currently hosts 23 Rory Gallagher lessons, including tracks that fans know well such as Stompin Ground, Whole Lot Of People, The Last Of The Independents, Cruise On Out, Road To Hell, Slumming Angel, Treat Her Right, Crest Of A Wave, Brute Force And Ignorance, and Daughter Of The Everglades.

Playing Style

Rory Gallagher's playing style fuses raw blues with driving rock, marked by fierce rhythm, bold bends, and economical, high-energy solos. He relies on chunky rhythms, singable blues lines, and a strong sense of groove, often using power chords, palm muting, and precise alternate picking to drive the song forward. His tone favors a midrange punch, sharp attack, and expressive phrasing, making every note feel purposeful and alive on stage.

🎸 Gear & Equipment

Rory Gallagher’s iconic rig centered on a sunburst Fender Stratocaster through a loud Marshall stack, delivering a gritty, midrange-forward blues tone that cut through a band. On stage he kept a fairly simple pedalboard—clean boosts, light overdrive or fuzz to push the amp, and a touch of reverb—letting his fingers, attack, and phrasing do the heavy lifting. The look and the sound together became a defining part of his legend.
