About Slash

Slash, born Saul Hudson in London in 1965, is one of rock’s most enduring guitar icons. He co-founded Guns N’ Roses in Los Angeles in 1985, and his blistering, blues-infused riffs helped redefine hard rock for a new generation. Appetite for Destruction (1987) became one of the best-selling debuts in rock history, propelling GN'R into global superstardom and leaving an indelible mark on the era's guitar-driven sound. The band’s raw energy, melodic solos, and Axl Rose’s charismatic frontman presence defined an era, with timeless tracks like Sweet Child O' Mine, Welcome to the Jungle, and Paradise City becoming rock milestones. Over the years, Slash has balanced GN'R’s legacy with solo projects—Slash's Snakepit and Velvet Revolver—and continued to shape rock's guitar vocabulary through touring, recording, and collaborations. He and GN'R were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Throughout his career, Slash has cultivated a signature sound that blends blues-based phrasing with thunderous, sustain-heavy riffs. His expressive bends, melodic leads, and soulful vibrato sit over a tight rhythm foundation, often built with rhythm tracks that swing between swaggering power chords and clean, singing solos. He favors a dynamic approach—punchy attack in verses, soaring lines in solos, and tasteful space—creating a voice that is instantly recognizable. That timeless tone and stage presence—his iconic top hat, long curls, and relentless energy—helped redefine the modern rock guitar hero and inspired countless players to chase both technical facility and musical feeling.

Playing Style

Slash’s playing draws from blues-rock roots, focusing on memorable melodies and expressive phrasing. He builds solos from blues pentatonic scales, uses careful bends, vibrato, and dynamic phrasing to turn a single note into a story. In rhythm parts, he blends power chords with precise palm-muting and aggressive strumming to drive the groove. His leads often sit on top of thick, sustain-rich tones created by humbuckers and high-gain amplification, with occasional sweep-like arpeggios that hint at classical technique without sacrificing musical accessibility. The overall result is a voice that feels both raw and refined, immediately identifiable in any track.

🎸 Gear & Equipment

Slash is closely associated with Gibson Les Paul Standard guitars—often in sunburst or tobacco burst—and has his own signature Slash Les Paul model. His live tone relies on Marshall-style amps (notably 100-watt heads) and a band of loud, echoing cabinets to deliver fierce sustain. A Dunlop Cry Baby wah is a staple in his rig for vocal-like leads, and he frequently uses delay and reverb to thicken solos and create space. Together, these elements forge that iconic, singing lead tone that defines a generation of rock guitar.
