Smashing Pumpkins

Smashing Pumpkins formed in Chicago in 1988, led by singer and guitarist Billy Corgan. The original lineup also included James Iha, D'Arcy Wretzky, and Jimmy Chamberlin. They quickly developed a reputation for ambitious, guitar-driven music that fused heavy riffs with hazy dream-pop textures. Their 1991 album Gish introduced their dense, moody sound, but it was Siamese Dream (1993) that propelled them into the mainstream, thanks to soaring melodies, layered guitar parts, and songs that shift from quiet verses to explosive choruses. The band became one of the defining acts of 1990s alternative rock, helping reshape rock guitar with cinematic arrangements and a willingness to experiment with mood and tempo. The impact of their innovations continues to influence new generations of players.

With Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) they cemented their status, topping charts and producing enduring anthems. They continued to explore diverse textures on later releases while weathering lineup changes, including drummer changes, and occasional hiatuses. Even after two decades, the Smashing Pumpkins remain a touchstone for guitarists, with riffs from Cherub Rock to Tonight, Tonight continuing to inspire new players.
