About Dokken
Dokken formed in Los Angeles in 1978, led by vocalist Don Dokken. The classic lineup soon took shape with guitarist George Lynch, bassist Jeff Pilson, and drummer Mick Brown, forging a muscular, melodic metal sound that fused punchy riffs with twin leads. Their debut album Breaking the Chains (1981) introduced fans to sharp hooks and precision riffing, setting the stage for a string of hard-hitting records.
The band broke through in the mid-80s with Tooth and Nail (1984) and Back for the Attack (1987), achieving multi-platinum sales and heavy MTV rotation. Their twin guitar harmonies, soaring solos, and catchy choruses helped define the look and sound of 80s melodic metal; tracks like It's Not Love became staples on rock radio and in practice rooms alike.
Despite lineup changes and periods of hiatus, Dokken's influence endures. Their music remains a cornerstone of classic hard rock guitar education, with a catalog that teaches precision in rhythm, melodic phrasing, and live energy. Reunions and new material continue to remind players why Dokken's songs remain relevant in modern playing.

Dokken's playing blends tight rhythm guitar with soaring dual-lead melodies. The band employed precise alternate picking, powerful palm-muted chugging, and melodic minor-based lead lines that sit over echo-laden harmonies. The twin-guitar approach creates harmonized solos and hooks that cut through a full drum/bass rhythm section. Expect blistering fast runs, blues-inflected bends, and tasteful use of whammy bar and vibrato to heighten emotion, with songs frequently building from punchy verse riffs to anthemic chorus melodies.
πΈ Gear & Equipment
Iconic Dokken gear centers on George Lynch's Dean ML signature guitar, defined by its aggressive tone and sustain. In the studio and on stage the band leaned on high-gain amp heads and robust cabinets (Marshall/Mesa-style) and used chorus, flanger, and delay to widen the guitars' space. A solid bass tone and tight drum sound complete the Dokken palette, delivering crisp riffs and soaring leads.
