Skid Row
About Skid Row
Skid Row formed in 1986 in Toms River, New Jersey, rising from the bustling club circuit with bassist/vocalist Rachel Bolan and guitarist Dave Sabo at the helm. They paired swaggering riffs with a powerhouse vocal presence from Sebastian Bach, and soon signed to Atlantic Records, becoming one of the era's defining late-80s hard rock acts. The 1989 self-titled debut yielded indelible anthems like I Remember You and 18 and Life, helping reshape glam metal into a heavier, more muscular radio staple and turning the band into global stadium-filling performers.
With a relentless touring ethic and evolving lineup, Skid Row pushed the sound forward on Slave to the Grind (1991), which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and later explored a heavier tilt on Subhuman Race (1995). Through lineup changes—from Bach’s departure to later vocalists—the band has retained its core identity: big riffs, strong hooks, and fearless solos delivered with fearless energy. Today, Skid Row remains active, maintaining a dedicated fanbase and continuing to inspire generations of guitarists who want to chase those iconic riffs and soaring leads on tracks that defined an era.

Skid Row’s playing blends muscular rhythm guitar with blistering dual-lead interplay. Dave Sabo and Scotti Hill lock in tight, palm-muted chugging and aggressive power-chord progressions, then cut through with soaring melodies in the solos. Expect blues-influenced pentatonic phrasing, fast alternate picking, string bending, and tasteful use of harmonics to punctuate choruses. Bach’s vocal lines often guide the guitar phrasing, but the band also delivers melodic hooks that make their riffs instantly singable and radio-ready. These elements make their material an excellent training ground for rhythm precision, dynamic contrast, and expressive lead work in classic hard rock.
🎸 Gear & Equipment
Iconic Skid Row tones come from a classic late-80s hard rock setup: sturdy, humbucker-equipped guitars (Gibson-style Les Paul‑type axes and similar workhorses) run through tube heads into 4x12 cabs to deliver chunky rhythm tones and hot lead sounds. The era’s lead players were commonly seen with Marshall- or Mesa/Boogie‑style amps, while effects pedals such as chorus, delay, and reverb were used to widen solos and add sheen to choruses. This combination created the bold, stadium-sized guitar tones that define Skid Row’s sound.
